About Habitat's SWAT Team

The Chalmers Ford team at the Albuquerque Habitat for Humanity banquet

Since 2000, Habitat for Humanity's SWAT team has been the backbone of their construction program. This dedicated group of approximately 30 skilled volunteers—comprised of both men and women, most of whom are retired—brings advanced homebuilding expertise to every project.  They come from all walks of life – a retired Air Force Pilot, a retired JC Penney Plant Manager, a retired FBI agent and at least 1/3 of the SWAT team hail from Sandia National labs.

Working 2-3 days per week, these volunteers serve as mentors and quality control specialists, teaching building skills to day volunteers while ensuring safety measures and construction standards are met. Their presence enables Habitat to welcome larger volunteer groups on build sites while keeping construction costs affordable for future homeowners.

The SWAT team works on all aspects of home construction except those requiring licensed and bonded contractors, making their contribution essential to Habitat's mission of providing decent, affordable housing for hardworking families.

Chalmers Ford's Community Partnership

Our sponsorship of the SWAT team reflects our commitment to supporting organizations that create a tangible, lasting impact in our community. Through Chalmers Cares, we've consistently partnered with groups that strengthen the fabric of Rio Rancho and Albuquerque—and Habitat's mission of homeownership aligns perfectly with our values.

“This isn’t a one-time gesture—it’s part of a relationship we’ve built over the years,” said Andy Strebe, General Manager of Chalmers Ford. “The SWAT team brings skill, consistency, and a quiet kind of leadership to every build site. We’re proud to support them because they represent the kind of community investment that lasts.”

“The SWAT team isn’t just helping us build homes—they’re helping us build capacity,” said Liz Vincent, Development Director at Habitat for Humanity of Albuquerque/Rio Rancho. “Because of their experience and commitment, we’re able to bring more volunteers to our build sites, lower construction costs, and serve more families. Partners like Chalmers Ford make that possible.”

Upcoming ReStore Supply Drive: July 14–28

To further support Habitat’s work, Chalmers Ford will host a community supply drive from June 14 through July 28 to benefit the newly opened Rio Rancho ReStore location.

We’ll have a clearly marked Habitat-branded truck onsite at our dealership, ready to accept donations of gently used home goods, tools, furniture, and more. This drive helps stock Habitat’s ReStore, where proceeds go directly toward building homes and supporting families right here in our community.

Donation guidelines will be posted on-site and shared via our social media channels.

Why It Matters

Your donations and support help Habitat:

  • Provide affordable homeownership opportunities for local families
  • Teach construction skills to community volunteers
  • Reduce construction costs through reuse and resale
  • Strengthen neighborhoods and promote long-term stability

A Legacy of Support

“We’ve been working with Habitat for more than two decades now,” said Gary Housley, Owner of Chalmers Ford. “It’s one of the most meaningful partnerships we’ve had—not just because of the homes built, but because of the people behind them. The SWAT team’s dedication and craftsmanship have left a lasting mark on this community, and we’re honored to be part of that story.”

Building Community Together

Our partnership with Habitat for Humanity's SWAT team represents our ongoing commitment to supporting initiatives that create lasting community impact. From affordable housing to volunteer skill development, this collaboration embodies the Real People. Real Value. Real Simple. philosophy that guides everything we do.

The SWAT team's dedication mirrors our commitment to excellence and community service. Just as these volunteers bring decades of expertise to each build site, we bring decades of automotive expertise and community partnership to Rio Rancho and Albuquerque.
